Today as part of our Reduce, Reuse, Recycle unit we counted up all of our rubbish. We did this to see how much rubbish we throw out and what we are putting in our bins.
- We took the rubbish out and tipped it out onto a tarpaulin.
- We sorted it into groups
- We put them into groups of plastics/packages - food scraps - paper and tissues
- Then we counted it and put the data onto tally charts.
- We counted each tally chart to get a final number for each group.
- We found - plastic/packets = 79 pieces Paper = 152 pieces Food Scraps = 91 pieces = 322 pieces of rubbish altogether.
- We timesed the amount by 12 to work out how many pieces each class would throw out.
- Then we timesed that by 5 to get how much per week.
- Then we timesed that by 32 for how many weeks we are at school.
- We found that we throw out around 291 840 pieces of paper that we could be recycling into our bins
- We found that we throw out around 174720 pieces of food scraps that we could be composting into our bins.
We then worked out by adding the food scraps and paper together that we are throwing away around 466 560 pieces a year, of rubbish, that we could be composting or recycling.
