We are signed up for Google Apps!

Introduction to Google Apps in Education for Room Nine

In class we are starting to use the Google Apps in Education Suite. This is a collection of applications that allow a huge range of learning experiences, all using the @huttcentral.school.nz domain.

In the class this enables us to log into our own accounts.

 We can:
-create documents, forms, spreadsheets, presentations etc. collaborate on documents, commenting on our own and others work.
-upload documents, images etc to our drive accounts access our information / learning from anywhere that we log into our account

It also allows me to share information with the students in a safe and effective manner. Here is a link to a presentation I created to help assist the children in their understanding of the tools.

Google Apps Presentation this is a link to Room Two's blog which has an excellent presentation on Google Apps. Have a look!

As we progress further, please ask your children to show you what we are doing and how this helps their learning. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me -
leannem@huttcentral.school.nz or Mrs Campbell (who is better at explaining these things) campbells@huttcentral.school.nz

Who is this Artist? A challenge from Mrs Andis.

Hello Miss Mahoney and room 9!

Firstly thank you so much for having me in your class, I had a great time and each one of you made it an awesome experience in so many different ways.  It was great to see all the effort you put into your work.  I am back working making picture frames today and I came across this picture.  I was wondering if any of you might know who the artist is?

Hoping your day is awesome,

Mrs Andis.

Jump Jam Leadership Course.

Today 10 students from our senior syndicate got the chance to go on a course to learn how to become really good Jump Jam leaders. We found out the leaders aren't just people who stand up on stage and do Jump Jam in front of others.

Good Jump Jam leaders are confident, know all the moves, have good posture, have good timing, use hand signals, and use words to help others do the correct moves.

You will be able to see them up on our stage on Friday mornings practising their skills.

Mrs Andis' last day.

It was Mrs Andis' last day on Friday. She challenged us to win best class and we did!

Mrs Andis' also challenged us in other ways during her time in our class. She particularly challenged us during our Photo Art project. We really appreciated her sharing all of her knowledge with us.

Thanks Mrs Andis!

Photography - Fractions

As part of our photography unit we needed to investigate 'The rule of thirds' in the composition of the photo.

                     rule-of-thirds

rule-of-thirds
With this grid in mind the ‘rule of thirds’ now identifies four important parts of the image, that you should consider placing points of interest in, as you frame your image.

Fractions
The rule of thirds got us thinking about fractions. Here are topics we are looking at a the moment.

A video on how to find fractions of a shape.

Click on this link to take you to Khan Acadamy. Here you can find more videos and exercises to practice your fractions. There is lots of stuff on http://www.mathletics.co.nz/ too. I have set tasks for every student to do on mathletics to practice fractions. They can also explore fractions further on there as well.

Other things we will be looking at are; fractions of a set, comparing fractions -which fraction is bigger, which one is smaller, ordering fractions and equivalent fractions.

We had an author visit!

Phillipa Werry came to visit us today as part of the NZ Post Book Awards festival week.

http://www.philippawerry.co.nz/

We heard lots about her books and her visit to Gallipoli. What did you get out of Phillipa's visit? Feel free to write a comment.

Road Safety Week

It is road safety week this week.

This afternoon our class got the chance to use speed radars to track the speed of the traffic outside our school.

We also used the speed radar to check how fast we run. We had 2 goes. One go to get our first speed then we had to beat that speed on our second run.

Some of us wore some signs to remind everybody to not use Ipods, Cell Phones etc... when driving as it can distract us from keeping our eye on the road.

Friday is Bright day. We need to wear bright coloured clothing. We are having bright day to remind everyone to be visible when we are around roadways.

Art Challenge

Mr Dowman has given us an art challenge. We will be working on this over the next week or so.

Art Challenge
Dear Room 9
I need some new artwork up in my office and so does the main office. We would like something a bit different. I was hoping you could make some artwork using photographs. I would love it if you could use our new tablets so others can see how they can be used.

So your challenge is to create an artwork using portrait photography.

For this challenge you will need to take good portrait photos.
You need to decide on what photos you will use and say why you used them.
You need to decide on the type of app you will use.
You will need to produce a piece of artwork using the app and your portrait photos.

Are you up for the challenge?

Kind Regards

Mr Dowman.

We will be working on these to help us complete the challenge.

What will we need to know?
About portraits.
Composition of good photos.
Fractions- Understanding the rule of thirds.
How lighting works in a photo.
Backgrounds of photos.
Subject – Who will be in the photo, how many people?
How to use the camera on the tablets.

How to use Apps to put filters onto photos.
