Our Rubbish Investigation

Today as part of our Reduce, Reuse, Recycle unit we counted up all of our rubbish. We did this to see how much rubbish we throw out and what we are putting in our bins.

  1. We took the rubbish out and tipped it out onto a tarpaulin.
  2. We sorted it into groups
  3. We put them into groups of plastics/packages - food scraps - paper and tissues
  4. Then we counted it and put the data onto tally charts.
  5. We counted each tally chart to get a final number for each group.
  6. We found - plastic/packets = 79 pieces Paper = 152 pieces  Food Scraps = 91 pieces = 322 pieces of rubbish altogether.
  7. We timesed the amount by 12 to work out how many pieces each class would throw out.
  8. Then we timesed that by 5 to get how much per week.
  9. Then we timesed that by 32 for how many weeks we are at school.
  10. We found that we throw out around 291 840 pieces of paper that we could be recycling into our bins
  11. We found that we throw out around 174720 pieces of food scraps that we could be composting into our bins.

We then worked out by adding the food scraps and paper together that we are throwing away around 466 560 pieces a year, of rubbish, that we could be composting or recycling.

Reusing - Start collecting!

Time to start looking at reusing items to create new objects/artworks.

Start collecting bottle tops, toilet paper rolls. water bottles, milk bottles, fizzy bottles and cereal boxes.

Collect them at home and put them in a safe place. Make sure they are clean. Bring them in after the holidays into Room 5. Then we can start being creative!

Land Art

We looked at some photographs of land art yesterday by Dietmar Voorwold. We were struck by the simplicity of them and the circular patterns he often uses. We thought we could do something like that when we go to the beach.

Bring and Buy Information Report.

Bring ‘n’ Buy
Bring and buy’s are for fundraising - normally for school camp. You bring stuff in that you don’t want, then you bring money in, then you buy the stuff that other people don’t want and you do.

Bring and Buys often have have loads of toys.
Some are broken, some are non-loved-recent-birthday-presents, and others have just been grown out of.
Some of them require electricity, others require cleverness and co-ordination, and much more.
Also, there are soft toys; teddies, and anything with fabric.

Book’s are common in bring and buy’s.
You can get lots of books varying from comic’s to phone books. Some books are old, some are new, and some are just meant to look old.

You can buy food from Bring and Buy’s.
You can get a variety of food, from water to juice, or ice cream, baking,  sausage’s and toasties.

Most Bring and Buy’s have raffles.
Raffles are a lucky draw for something you want, and you need to pay for tickets. Similar to the lottery.

Some Bring and Buys have activities.
They have activities like trampolines, ball games, and sometimes they even have nail polish!

New Topic Challenge

A Letter From Yertle the Turtle

Dear Room 9

My name is Yertle. I’m a Hawksbill Turtle and I was hoping you could help. There are only 30 000 Hawksbill Turtles left in the world. We are endangered. I have lost lots of friends because of rubbish and plastics that people have dropped and ended up in the ocean.

I was hoping you would be able to in some way to slow down the rubbish that gets into the ocean by changing something in your school, your home or your community.

Thanks for your help!

Love

Yertle the Turtle
